The Senior Citizens Council of Ottawa is offering free income tax clinics for seniors, persons with disabilities, single parents, the unemployed and low-income earners. Volunteer chartered accountant will staff clinics in over 20 community centres around the city, Monday through Thursday evenings in March.

The outreach teams provide a multidimensional in-home assessment in order to identify appropriate services and support for seniors with complex health problems. Our teams work with clients, their physicians, and caregivers as well as other health care providers to optimize seniors' independence and quality of life.

The purpose of admissions to Geriatric Assessment Units is to provide seniors with a complete health assessment. The geriatric assessment unit teams work with seniors and their families to establish appropriate goals and therapeutic plans. The team makes recommendations to help seniors remain as independent as possible. The Geriatric Assessment Units are located at the Ottawa Hospital, Civic Campus and at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital.

The purpose of Geriatric Day Hospitals is to provide multidisciplinary assessment for patients who are experiencing a change in function, memory, mood or have complex medical issues. Short-term treatment, counseling, and education are available to patients and their caregivers to facilitate community support and long-term care planning. There are four Geriatric Day Hospitals, they are located at the Sisters of Charity Organization, Elizabeth Bruy�re Pavilion and Bronson Pavilion, the Ottawa Hospital, Civic Campus and the Queensway-Carleton Hospital.

Geriatric Outpatient Clinics are clinics staffed by physicians and nurses who are specialists in the assessment of elderly persons.

Geriatric Rehabilitation Units are hospital beds where elderly people may be admitted for individualized rehabilitation programs under the direction of a multidisciplinary team.

LETTER CARRIERS’ ALERT PROGRAM is a free community based program
intended to provide an added sense of security for older or disabled persons living in
their own home. It is designed to alert those who can help you if you are in an
emergency situation while alone at home.

This Council was founded in 1957 as a not-for-profit volunteer association comprising
over 70 senior citizens organizations and residential groups.

The Council is dedicated to providing seniors with the means to enhance their well-being and to
remain self-sufficient, helping them become involved and integrated in the community and ensuring
senior participation in planning and improving the services that affect them.

The Council provides its services through a volunteer board of directors comprising seniors, a
full-time Executive Director and two staff members, with over 200 regular senior volunteers who
donate over 12,000 hours of their time each year.

The Senior Citizens Council of Ottawa is partially funded by the City of Ottawa, the United Way
of Ottawa and the Ontario Ministry of Health.
