Toronto, ON – A Million Possibilities: Solo Ocean Row 2017, a once in a lifetime 4,000- kilometre journey that is captivating the imagination and inspiring the spirit, begins on Sunday, December 3rd, 2017. Colin Sanders, 64, will row across the Atlantic Ocean from the Canary Islands to the Caribbean to raise awareness and funds for Community Living Ontario, a family based association assisting people who have an intellectual disability and their families. Sanders’ adult son, Jeff, is supported by Community Living Campbellford/Brighton.
“It’s been two years in the making to get this far. There’s no question that all along the way, there were moments where I thought, ‘Man, is this really going to happen?,’” said Sanders, a resident of Port Hope, Ontario.
“One of the momentous things for me was getting the boat shipped over in a container, and the other watershed moment was arriving in the Canary Islands, realizing that I’m going to do this.”
Sanders arrived in Gran Canaria on November 18th to make final preparations aboard Socks II, his 21-foot ocean row boat, ahead of this weekend’s launch. He had planned to leave the Canary Islands on Friday, December 1st, but the weather conditions are not favourable. Sanders is being assisted by Leven Brown, an ocean rowing consultant who has crossed the Atlantic and Indian oceans.
“Less than 30 people in the world have successfully rowed across the Atlantic by themselves,” added Sanders. “When I reach either Antigua or Barbados, I’ll be in pretty select company.” People are encouraged to donate to Community Living Ontario by visiting
