Become a literacy tutor for children ages 6-12!

We are looking for Homework club volunteers to help tutor children in grades 1-6 (ages 6-12) to help with their homework as well as improve their literacy skills!

Frontier College Ottawa’s Homework Club program provides homework help to children and youth in low-income and newcomer communities across Ottawa. We aim to give many vulnerable children the best opportunity to improve their literacy skills and prepare for a brighter future. With children having to transition to learning online for almost two years due to the pandemic, many are delayed in their reading and writing skills. With this, community support is more needed than ever!

After over a year of running our tutoring programs virtually, we are happy to announce that we will finally be returning in person this upcoming fall at the following library locations: Ruth E. Dickinson library in Barrhaven, Orléans library, Greensboro library and St. Laurent library. However, volunteers can choose to tutor virtually or opt for a hybrid model (half in person and half online) if they wish.

Volunteering with the Homework Club Program is an excellent way to gain experience in early childhood education or literacy tutoring. It is also an ideal environment to contribute meaningfully to your community. We require no prior teaching experience and provide you with all of the training and materials you need. Just bring your communication skills, patience, enthusiasm and love of learning!

This program will take place at the library location that you choose. The date and time that the program will take place is still TBD, but it will happen on a weekday evening.

If you are tutoring online, tutoring sessions occur once a week via video conference call (Zoom, MS Teams or Google Classroom) and last approximately one hour each. Sessions are scheduled based on tutors’ and learners’ availability.

Apply by contacting We will then contact you via email within 1-2 weeks to fill out a short Google Form. Note that candidates aged 18 or over will be required to provide a vulnerable sector Police Check. All candidates will be required to provide 2 references upon request.

We look forward to meeting you!
